After World War II, while studying philosophy in Paris, Jean Daniel Reynaud did not find in what he calls “a philosophy of dining rooms” the instruments that were needed “to understand the world and how it functioned (…) and to get away from a number of preconceived ideas about society and its future.” Instead, he wants “to go see by himself, observe things where they are”. Jean Daniel Reynaud wants to understand society from the inside, by observing social reality directly.
In this film, he looks back on his itinerary as an empirical sociologist, reflects on his interest for conflict and collective bargaining (the theory and practice of which he has contributed to renovate in France), and shows how his thinking on these subjects is founded in a more general sociological approach to the social production of rules and regulation.
